Before Helena Dollimore was elected to serve the people of Hastings, Rye and the villages, she campaigned with firefighters from the area to save The Ridge Fire Station.
Last year, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) had put forward proposals to turn The Ridge Fire Station to a day-crewed station, which would have meant firefighters would work on site during the day and respond on call from home in the evening.
Local firefighters fought back, saying such a move would lead to slower response times for Hastings and its surroundings in the evenings and overnight.
Helena set up an online petition opposing the proposals, which was signed by thousands of residents.
After her campaign gained steam, the East Sussex Fire Authority recommended the plans should now not be taken forward.
Following that success, Helena welcomed a number of local firefighters to Parliament where they discussed the many challenges facing our local Fire and Rescue services.
“I will always speak up for our local fire service and firefighters,” Helena said.
