Helena Dollimore MP Launches campaign to improve playgrounds

Helena Dollimore MP has launched a new campaign to improve local playgrounds for children across Hastings, Rye and the villages.

The Labour and Co-operative MP has carried out an audit of all the playgrounds in her constituency and found that 8 playgrounds had closed since 2014 and over half of the playgrounds in Hastings, Rye and the villages needed upgrading.

As a result, too many families in Hastings, Rye and the villages do not have an adequate playground within walking distance from their homes. Without easy access on foot, children are more likely to rely on a parent or carer to accompany them.

Backed by local parents and carers, Helena’s new campaign is calling on local councils, housing associations, and private landowners to prioritise play and reverse the rapid disappearance of playgrounds across Hastings, Rye and the villages.

Helena said:

“Every child deserves a safe space to play, explore, and be themselves. But so many of our playgrounds are in disrepair or completely closed, and I’ve spoken to parents who need to take two buses to get to their nearest playground. I am calling for our councils, housing associations, and developers to get their act together and give children the play spaces they need.”

Helena has launched an online petition for local residents to support her playground campaign and share their experiences. Please add your name here.
